Located in north-central area of Romania, on both sides of the upper Mures River, the geographical boundary of the city is the Mures River and Corneşti Hill. Targu Mures is bordered by the Mures Sângeorgiu, Cristeşti, Livezeni, Santana de Mures and the Mures Sâncraiu villages.
On February 22 of the year 2000, as a sign of honor for the sacrifices made and bravery shown in combat for winning the 1989 Revolution, the city of Targu Mures is declared a martyr city.
Targu Mures is located at the intersection of three geographical areas: Plain Transylvania, the Mures Valley and Niraj Valley, set at the altitude of approximately 320 m above sea level. Built initially on the lower terrace on the left of Mures River, the city has been developing over time and started occupying the slopes and hills. Today the city lies on both sides of the Mures River course, Cornesti and Niraj Hill.
Although in Targu Mures the old buildings were not particularly kept as they originally were, the city going through several fires over time, the old town manages to preserve the medieval air, at least in the center of the city. Here, a series of beautifully decorated buildings recall to the medieval old town or the city in full development from the interwar period.
